Intro

Förpackningsinsamlingen, FTI for short, is the organization that makes packaging recycling possible in Sweden. They run over 5,000 collection points across the country.

The project started in 2021 after we won a competitive pitch for the assignment. I worked as PM and UX/UI designer through the whole process. It ran over six months and covered research, leading workshops, sitemaps, user personas, wireframes, prototyping and leading the development team.

Challenge

FTI speaks to several completely different audiences at once. A private individual wants to know which container a yoghurt pot goes in and where the nearest station is. A municipality needs operational and contractual information. Producers and logistics companies in waste management need something else again.

One website needed to serve all of them without any group feeling it had landed on somebody else’s site, and it still needed to stay manageable for FTI’s own web editors. Giving each audience its own bespoke corner would have solved the first problem and created a site nobody could maintain a year later.

Design

We split the site into four audience tracks, each with its own content and entry points, and built them all from a small set of shared templates and components. The experience stays specific where it matters and the editing model stays simple. Editors work with a handful of patterns, not hundreds of one-off pages.

The design system was built on FTI’s existing visual guidelines, adjusted for the web. Their identity was already well established offline and the site needed to extend it, not compete with it.

Result

The finished site runs to over 300 pages, all assembled from that small library. Four audiences each get content written for them, and FTI’s web editors can publish and restructure routine content without design or development support.

The component library has kept paying off since. Because the templates carry the design decisions, new pages come out consistent by default. A site this size would otherwise drift further from the system with every addition.
